PGN and PIS Collaborate on Infrastructure, Maritime Transport, and Low-Carbon Fuel Utilization
Jakarta – PT PGN Tbk, as Subholding Gas Pertamina, has partnered with PT PIS, Subholding Integrated Marine Logistics, to collaborate on infrastructure development, maritime transport, and the utilization of low-carbon fuel. PGN and PIS will explore various business opportunities related to the construction, utilization, and transport of low-carbon fuel products through maritime modes.
The cooperation began with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PGN's President Director, Arief Setiawan Handoko, and PIS's President Director, Yoki Firnandi, witnessed by PT Pertamina (Persero)'s Director of Logistics & Infrastructure, Alfian Nasution, in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. The low-carbon fuels in question include CNG, LNG, hydrogen, ammonia, or other fuels used for vehicles and vessels owned by PIS.
“Through this partnership, PIS can support PGN in providing transportation services for LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, liquid CO2, and other commodities using LNG carriers, FSRUs, FRUs, powerships, or other maritime transportation modes. This aligns with the commitment to reducing emissions in the maritime industry, and this collaboration also contributes to Pertamina Group's role in achieving the NZE 2060 target and in the current energy transition. We hope this partnership will be mutually beneficial, and the studies will be comprehensive so that this collaboration can be realized soon,” said Arief.
Yoki stated that this partnership is a form of synergy that strengthens Pertamina Group and its commitment to serving Indonesia. "PIS collaborates with PGN to utilize various fleets and infrastructures in gas distribution, which are widely dispersed," he added.
Next, PGN and PIS will explore options for joint ownership of LNG carriers or other maritime transportation modes, as well as the joint utilization of PIS-owned facilities, such as the Jakarta Integrated Green Terminal. Moreover, PGN and PIS will conduct joint studies on the development of shipping, marine facilities, and terminal storage that use low-carbon fuels.
PGN supports the use of environmentally friendly fuels in the maritime industry. One of the business innovations that have been initiated is LNG Bunkering Services, where LNG becomes an alternative fuel for ships.
Furthermore, PGN requires maritime routes to transport LNG to areas not yet reached by gas pipeline networks. In addition to expanding PGN's business breakthroughs in providing environmentally friendly fuels, this collaboration with PIS will drive business expansion in distributing natural gas to various regions.
“PGN recognizes the importance of the maritime industry for energy supply and supporting economic activities. We hope that in the future, the synergy between PGN and PIS will manifest in a way that complies with international regulations, such as the IMO, and adopts environmentally friendly energy technologies,” concluded Arief.
