PGN Commemorates Earth Day with Environmental Awareness Campaign

Jakarta – PT PGN Tbk, as a Subholding Gas Pertamina, continues to promote environmental awareness on Earth Day, a global movement celebrated on April 22 to raise public consciousness about environmental issues.

For Earth Day 2024, PGN encouraged its employees (Perwira) to join an environmentally friendly campaign through a group activity. The event kicked off with a bike-to-work initiative, where participants cycled 8.4 km from PGN Jakarta Area to PGN’s Central Office. By cycling, participants contributed to reducing air pollution and carbon emissions from motor vehicles. Over 100 participants joined, including PGN employees, the Directorate General of Pollution and Environmental Damage Control – Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Ditjen PPKL KLHK), the Pertamina Cycling Community, and the Bike to Work Community.

The event continued with a talk show titled "Planet vs Plastic," featuring Tulus Laksono, Secretary of Ditjen PPKL KLHK, and environmental activist/celebrity Nugie as speakers. The discussion focused on the alarming global plastic production, which amounts to 380 million tons annually. The aim is to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040, contributing to a plastic-free future.

Harry Budi Sidharta, Director of Infrastructure and Technology at PGN, urged PGN employees to take greater responsibility for environmental preservation. “As a company in the oil and gas sector, PGN must take concrete actions to ensure our operations in the natural gas industry do not harm the environment,” said Harry on Friday, May 3, 2024.

Harry also emphasized the importance of waste management principles based on the 4R approach—reduce, reuse, recycle, and replace. “While plastic use is inevitable in our daily lives, it can be managed wisely,” he added.

PGN’s environmental preservation efforts are not limited to Earth Day. The Subholding Gas Group consistently carries out corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. PGN’s subsidiary, PT Pertamina Gas, through its West Java Area (OWJA) unit, is helping restore coastal erosion at Rembat Beach, Juntinyuat Village, Indramayu Regency, through its “Perisai Jaga Bumi” program. This includes the installation of Geotubes, planting mangrove trees, and waste filtering to strengthen and protect Rembat Beach.

Meanwhile, PT Nusantara Regas has signed a partnership agreement with the Thousand Islands National Park Office to preserve the environment and biodiversity. The collaboration includes coral restoration, mangrove planting, building turtle conservation units, educating school children on conservation, and organizing beach clean-up activities.

In line with Pertamina's commitment to achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060, PGN remains steadfast in reducing carbon emissions. By March 2024, PGN has reduced emissions by 278.4 tons CO2 Eq, out of the target of 1,205 tons CO2 Eq for 2024.

“Environmental preservation efforts must continue within the Subholding Gas Group as part of our responsibility and concern for the Earth. From reducing plastic usage to lowering carbon emissions and supporting other conservation movements, these actions are vital for our planet’s future,” concluded Harry.
