PGN Enhances Natural Gas Flow by 48 BBTUD to Central Java with Infrastructure Integration
Semarang – PT PGN Tbk has completed the interconnection of the CNG Cluster Tambak Aji Distribution Pipeline with the Kendal - Mangkang Distribution Pipeline, which is connected to the Cirebon-Semarang Stage 1 Transmission Pipeline (Pipa Cisem Stage 1). This marks a significant milestone as PGN transitions the gas supply for the Tambak Aji and Wijaya Kusuma Industrial Zones, which has been reliant on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for the past 10 years, to a more sustainable pipeline-based gas source.
Since 2022, the demand for natural gas in Central Java has increased significantly, supported by the construction of the Cisem Transmission Pipeline by the government. When the Semarang-Batang section of Pipa Cisem Stage 1 and the Kendal - Mangkang - Tambak Aji distribution pipeline were completed, PGN successfully transitioned from CNG to pipeline gas supply at Tambak Aji. This was done by connecting the gas from the Offtake Kendal to the existing CNG distribution cluster at Tambak Aji via the Mangkang - Tambak Aji distribution pipeline, explained PGN SOR 3 General Manager, Hedi Hedianto, on June 4, 2024.
Currently, PGN supplies 3 BBTUD (3 million cubic meters per month) of natural gas to the commercial industrial sector in Central Java. Additionally, through the integration of the Gresik-Semarang gas pipeline infrastructure, Kalimantan-Java pipeline, and the Central Java distribution network, PGN also serves the electricity sector with 45 BBTUD.
Hedi explained that PGN has been operating in Semarang since 2014 to support the economic competitiveness of Central Java by providing environmentally friendly and competitive CNG supply to industrial areas. At that time, no pipeline network was available to the region, and the industrial areas were far from the gas sources. PGN pioneered the construction of a distribution pipeline network supplied by CNG (CNG Cluster) from Tambak Aji and Wijaya Kusuma Industrial Zones, with gas supplied by PT Gagas Energi Indonesia and delivered through a Pressure Reducing Facility (PRS) at Tambak Aji.
Following the transition from CNG to pipeline gas, the source of the gas is now from the Jambaran Tiung Biru (JTB) gas field operated by Pertamina EP in Bojonegoro.
"With the shift from CNG to pipeline gas, we expect an increase in gas consumption. On the other hand, the availability of a more sustainable gas supply will allow us to expand our customer base in the Tambak Aji, Wijaya Kusuma, and surrounding areas," said Hedi.
The Cisem Stage 1 pipeline is also connected to the existing Gresik - Semarang Gas Pipeline, allowing for greater interconnection across Java to enhance gas utilization in East Java, Central Java, and West Java. PGN hopes that the government will continue the development of the Cisem Stage II transmission pipeline, enabling PGN to further expand its distribution infrastructure and gas services, providing wider access to natural gas for communities and expanding the market.
