Ahead of Nyepi, Subholding Gas Ensures Reliable Gaslink Distribution in Bali
Jakarta – Pertamina’s Subholding Gas, through its subsidiaPT Gagas Energi Indonesia ("Gagas"), has ensured the continued reliability of natural gas supply during the 2024 Nyepi holiday in Bali.
Gagas began its natural gas distribution in Bali in early 2023 through Gaslink, which uses Compressed Natural Gas ("CNG") transportation imported from East Java. The compressed natural gas is transported in specially designed trucks known as Gas Transport Modules ("GTM"), traveling over 450 km by road and sea to reach Denpasar. Upon arrival, the GTM provides gas supply to industrial and commercial customers in Bali, including hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs.
Under normal conditions, Gaslink is delivered to Bali every 2-3 days, with storage refills at customers' locations occurring daily. However, to anticipate the closure of the Gilimanuk and Ketapang ports during the Nyepi holiday, gas deliveries will be maximized to ensure uninterrupted supply to customers before the Nyepi observance begins on Monday, March 11, 2024.
Muhammad Hardiansyah, President Director of Gagas, assured that sufficient natural gas supply will be available at customer locations in Bali during Nyepi. “To meet the gas needs of customers that will remain operational during Nyepi, such as hotels, we will maximize Gaslink refills on Sunday afternoon (March 10, 2024). The refilling process will resume on Tuesday morning (March 12, 2024),” Hardiansyah explained.
The certainty of gas supply during Nyepi is highly anticipated by customers, as expressed by I Komang Sutarmika, Chief Engineering of Platinum Beach Hotel Jimbaran. “During Nyepi, the hotel will remain operational, though with certain limitations to respect the sacredness of the ceremony. We will continue cooking and doing laundry for our guests, so we need a continuous gas supply,” said Komang.
Hardiansyah also added that distributing Gaslink in Bali presents unique challenges, particularly due to the lack of a local gas supply source on the island. However, as part of its commitment to optimize the distribution of natural gas across Indonesia and support the government’s target to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060, Gagas will continue to focus on and develop the distribution of natural gas as an environmentally friendly alternative energy for Bali.
Furthermore, the development of the natural gas market through CNG in Bali has shown a positive trend. By the end of 2023, Gagas had served around 16 customers, with a total distribution of 10,950 MMBTU. In 2024, Gagas projects its gas distribution for customers in Bali will reach 45,000 MMBTU.
