Supporting the Recovery of the Ciliwung River Ecosystem, PGN Successfully Removes 7,956 Kg of Waste
Jakarta – PT PGN Tbk organized the Ciliwung River Educational Rafting event, contributing to the restoration of the Ciliwung River, which has been polluted by industrial and household waste, on Saturday, (27/07/2024). This event, which included river education rafting and a river waste census, aimed to clean up and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining the river’s ecosystem.
The Ciliwung Educational Rafting is part of the sustainability program of the Ciliwung Festival, initiated by PT Pertamina, coinciding with National River Day on July 27. The event was attended by 84 participants who cleaned the river using rubber boats along a route of approximately 3,676 meters. The cleanup effort successfully collected 7,956 kilograms of waste.
In addition to cleaning the river, the educational rafting also involved releasing 1,000 native Ciliwung fish and planting tree saplings along the riverbank, which were donated to the Ciliwung Care Community. During the event, PGN also introduced the "Gerbang Biru Ciliwung" program, a movement aimed at building a cleaner, more beautiful, and sustainable Ciliwung River.
“By adhering to ESG principles, PGN aims to contribute to the conservation and protection of water resources, which are vital for human life and surrounding ecosystems. The Ciliwung River plays an essential role as a lifeline for the local community, not only as a water source but also in Jakarta's drainage system,” said PGN’s Director of HR and Business Support, Rachmat Hutama, (29/07/2024).
The recovery program for the Ciliwung River will continue in a sustainable manner going forward. The focus will be on empowering the local community to independently manage the river and restore its natural functions.
In 2024, several key programs of the Gerbang Biru Ciliwung initiative are underway, including mapping the Ciliwung area, pilot innovation projects, development of farming/planting groups, establishing waste banks, and creating a Blue Module curriculum (aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum). The Blue Module focuses on environmental and disaster preparedness education tailored to schools near the Ciliwung River, particularly in Depok and Pondok Cina. This initiative aims to instill awareness of the Ciliwung River's importance. Additionally, an extracurricular rafting program at SMP N 34 Depok is expected to foster future Ciliwung-specific rafting athletes.
PGN expresses its gratitude to the Depok City Government, Pondok Cina residents, SMP N 34 Depok, and the Ciliwung Care Community for their involvement in implementing the Ciliwung River recovery program. PGN also encourages the public to join in understanding the importance of preserving the Ciliwung River. This collective effort will have a long-lasting impact, ensuring a better future for the Ciliwung River and preserving it as a natural heritage for future generations.
